Degchi cuisine became known throughout the North West Frontier, Punjab & Sindh Province during the renovation and extension of the GT road by Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century due to sporadic proliferation of Dhabas throughout the route. One school of thought states that the name 'Degchi' for food may reflect the fact that an ethnic group living in that area of north Pakistan are called Deghchi.
