Petland, Inc. is a privately held Ohio corporation founded in 1967. Initially, Petland owned and operated retail pet stores in Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. In the early 1970's, Petland began franchising pet stores and entered the business of wholesale distribution for pet-related merchandise. In the late 1980's, Petland expanded its presence in Canada and entered international markets. Petland currently has stores in the United States and international markets including Japan, South Africa, China, Canada and Mexico.

It is our desire at Petland to make a difference in the communities we serve. For more than 45 years, Petland has been the retail pet industry leader in the area of animal care with ongoing staff training programs, in-store animal husbandry systems and community service programs aimed at placing homeless pets and preventing unwanted litters in the community.

• The cost of developing your Petland franchise varies with the size of your store ranging from $299,000 to over $900,000 and the scope of the store from a small selection of pets and tropical fish without a puppy kennel to a marketing dominating selection of tropical & saltwater fish, birds, small animals reptiles and a state of the art kennel allowing your store to offer over 50 puppies representing dozens of breeds.
• Depending on your available credit and collateral, you can finance up to 70 percent of the development cost of your franchise. Petland will assist you in developing a business plan and loan-request package. Then we will help you in choosing the right lending institution and in preparing for your presentation to lenders.

Petland provides you with 6 weeks of training before and surrounding the opening of your Petland store; three weeks at our corporate headquarters and three weeks at your new store. You'll learn the business of operating a Petland store including financial management, supervision of personnel, animal care techniques, inventory management, merchandising, community relations, and marketing programs. Petland will also provide you with comprehensive operations manuals and videos for reference and to assist you in the ongoing training of your personnel. Throughout the year, Petland also offers training programs for you and your key managers, as well as regional training opportunities.

Management Training
Petland offers a comprehensive management training program to prepare each new franchisee to execute the Petland Operating System. From recruiting and training skills, to planning and organizing, to buying and merchandising, to financial statement analysis, the training focuses on preparing each new franchisee to succeed. This one-week classroom training program is strategic in nature and teaches the mind set necessary to guide a Petland store to its full market potential. This program teaches "why" we do what we do.

Hands-On Training
Petland's hands on training program provides one week of tactical training in a high volume Petland training store and covers opening procedures, closing procedures, pet care, merchandising, buying, scheduling, and leading a real team of Pet Counselors and animal care associates. This program teaches the "how" we do what we do.

Inventory Control Management
This specialized class teaches franchisees and their associates the systems necessary to monitor inventory, improve margins and the methods for effective and efficient buying practices.

Sales Manager Training
This specialized class teaches franchisees and their associates the best systems for effective recruiting and Pet Counselor development.

Pet Counselor 101
This class is offered in the Petland Business Improvement Center and regionally directly to Petland Pet Counselors.
