In 1989, Mr Lee Tong Kuon, the elder brother of Mr Lee Tong Soon, spent a year in Thailand mastering the skills and techniques of cooking authentic Thai-Teochew cuisine. Together with his brother and some friends, Mr Lee started the first Thai Village restaurant in the East Coast area. After three years of hardwork, the first branch of Thai Village was set up at the Oasis. To their pleasant surprise, the business at the Oasis was exceptionally good.
In 1996, two new restaurants are opened, 1 at Sea View Hotel and the other in Jurong.
In 1997, a joint venture started the first overseas venture of Thai Village in Indonesia. In 1999, Thai Village Singapore entered into another joint venture, this time with the Shanghai International Trade Board and started off the first Thai Village restaurant in Shanghai, China. Business was very encouraging and a recovery of the total investment is realized within just the first year of operations. In 2000, Thai Village was listed in the Singapore Stock Exchange, becoming the first ever restaurant to achieve such amazing achievement.
