Founded in 1962, and operating as a buying cooperative, the focus was on the need to secure great products at competitive prices for each independent dealer store's retail customers, which soon evolved into Big O Tires stores franchise organization. In July 1996, Big O Tires was acquired by T.B.C. Corporation which markets automotive replacement tires though a multi-channel marketing strategy. T.B.C.'s retail operations include company-operated retail centers under the Tire Kingdom, Merchant's Tire & Auto Centers, and National Tire and Battery brands, and franchised retail stores under the Big O Tires brand. TBC also markets to the wholesale community by selling to customers who operate more than 200 regional distribution centers serving independent tire dealers throughout the United States, as well as and in Canada and Mexico. In September 2005, TBC was purchased by Sumitomo Corporation of America, which is the largest wholly-owned subsidiary of Tokyo-based Sumitomo Corporation, one of the world's leading traders of goods and services.

The total estimated initial investment ranges from $225,800 to $543,300. The purchase price for an existing Big O Tires store is negotiated between the buyer and the seller.
